Republican gubernatorial candidates' extremism on abortion spiraled out of control in a debate last night. Rebecca Kleefisch and two other candidates vowed to remove local elected officials from office if they do not go along with their support of a 1849 law imposing a near total ban on abortion in Wisconsin.
As the nation still freshly grieves the Supreme Court’s overturning of our constitutional right to abortion care, Wisconsin Democrats at their annual convention this weekend emphasized unity, hope, and a constructive path forward for the Badger State.
Today, the conservative majority United States Supreme Court decided against the will of the people and voted to overturn Roe v. Wade, the precedent-setting case that secured our right to abortion care in America.
Today, our state’s elected Republicans had an opportunity to put Wisconsin families first and act on Governor Tony Evers’ call to protect what a majority of constituents support. Yet, GOP legislators let Wisconsinites down.
This weekend, Republican politicians in Wisconsin, including Attorney General candidate Eric Toney and conservative state legislators, will join in at the National Rifle Association’s (NRA) state conference - all while families across the nation are still gathered in mourning the toll of gun violence massacres in New York, Texas, and other local communities and common sense gun safety reform laws languish.
Instead of sharing a plan focused on real issues Wisconsinites care about, in a recent media interview Michels revealed he is hung up on same-sex marriage - a right that’s been protected in America for years now under the 14th amendment and which is supported by 72 percent of the public according to a recent state poll.
While the January 6 physical attack occurred on just one day, it wasn’t and isn’t an isolated event. It was the culmination of a coordinated criminal conspiracy, with real ties to Wisconsin, that is still impacting us today.
Protecting our freedom to vote now and in the future requires exposing the lies, calling out the perpetrators and demanding accountability for those who would sabotage our elections for their own political power.
Every kid in the Badger state should have equal access to high quality public education. Thanks to Gov. Tony Evers, we’re on the right path to get there.
