Wisconsin GOP Continues Defending Their Gerrymandered Maps

Republicans and right-wing intervenors had a chance to submit maps that are fair and give Wisconsinites a truly representative legislature. They instead prioritized their desperation to hold onto power and submitted maps that would protect their gerrymander over the voices of Wisconsin voters.

MADISON, Wis. — Today, parties in the case for fair maps responded to the court-appointed independent experts’ recent analysis of submitted maps. According to the experts’ reports, the maps submitted by Republicans and right-wing intervenors Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty (WILL) were obvious partisan gerrymanders, and in responses submitted today, Republicans still continued to defend their gerrymandered maps.

Today’s deadline in the case comes after the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled that Wisconsin’s current GOP-drawn maps are unconstitutional, and ordered for new maps that are up to constitutional standards to be put in place – a decision that a recent Marquette Law School Poll shows a majority of Wisconsin voters approve of.

The following are statements from Chris Walloch, executive director of A Better Wisconsin Together:

“Republicans and right-wing intervenors had a chance to submit maps that are fair and give Wisconsinites a truly representative legislature. They instead prioritized their desperation to hold onto power and submitted maps that would protect their gerrymander over the voices of Wisconsin voters.

“As Republicans continue to defend their gerrymandered maps in a desperate attempt to dodge accountability, we are appreciative of the new majority on the Wisconsin Supreme Court for ensuring the submitted maps were reviewed by independent redistricting experts, and for moving us toward fair maps in an unbiased, transparent, and timely manner.”
