MADISON, Wis. – In a recent media interview, right-wing judge and Wisconsin Supreme Court candidate Maria Lazar doubled down on her radical anti-abortion agenda by calling the overturning of Roe v. Wade “very wise,” and indicating she would have disagreed with the state supreme court’s 4-3 ruling that an 1849 law could no longer be used to ban abortion across Wisconsin.
When asked about her endorsement from Pro-Life Wisconsin, an extreme group that wants to ban abortion in the Badger State and once called Lazar “the only choice,” Lazar went on a bizarre rant in which she said the following of the U.S. Supreme Court decision (Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization) that overturned Roe v. Wade and took abortion rights away from millions: “I can also tell you that the United States Supreme Court in the issue, issuance of Dobbs, which everyone threw tantrums about and were very upset about, was actually very wise.”
Lazar then went on to imply how she may have ruled on a case preventing the use of an 1849 law as a near total abortion ban in Wisconsin, saying of a one-vote majority decision by the Wisconsin Supreme Court, “I don’t know that I would have been in the majority on that case …”
A Better Wisconsin Together Communications Director Lucy Ripp says Lazar’s stance on abortion should raise alarm bells for all Wisconsinites and goes wholeheartedly against what the majority of Wisconsin voters want for the state.
“Maria Lazar continues to embody the exact right-wing extremism that Wisconsin voters have rejected time and time again,” said Ripp. “It’s time for right-wing elected officials like Lazar to stop forcing their way into our exam rooms and finally put an end to their repeated attacks on our access to reproductive healthcare.”
In addition to a prior endorsement from Pro-Life Wisconsin, Lazar has also been endorsed in a previous election by Wisconsin Right to Life, another extreme anti-abortion group, and pushed an anti-abortion agenda in both state and federal court.
“Lazar needs to double check the job description of the role she’s seeking on our state’s highest court,” said Ripp. “The Wisconsin Supreme Court exists to uphold and protect our constitutional rights and freedoms, not take them away.”
