MADISON, Wis. – It’s no secret that Congressman Tom Tiffany’s support for trade wars, foreign wars, and cuts to health care and food assistance at the behest of billionaires is driving up costs and hurting working people across Wisconsin. In recognition of the upcoming Labor Day holiday and in solidarity with workers across the state, A Better Wisconsin Together is calling attention to even more ways Tiffany has targeted working people and their ability to have a say in their workplace on issues like safety, working conditions, wages, and benefits.
“No matter the job, Wisconsin workers should have the freedom to be safe at work, have a seat at the table, earn good wages, and have proper benefits,” said A Better Wisconsin Together spokeswoman Lucy Ripp. “But looking at Congressman Tiffany’s record, he is A-OK collecting his taxpayer funded paycheck and healthcare while voting to take similar benefits away from his own constituents.”
Congressman Tiffany didn’t even bother to show up to work on the day that his colleagues in Congress voted on the PRO Act of 2021. In fact, Tiffany was the only Congressperson who did not show up to vote. The PRO Act, which still has yet to become law because of MAGA Republicans like Tiffany blocking it, would protect Wisconsin workers from being taken advantage of by big corporations and unfair labor practices.
Tiffany also skipped voting on a bill that would protect benefits for disabled first responders, and in 2023 Tiffany co-sponsored and voted for the REINS Act despite labor unions warning it will make workers less safe.
Ripp noted that in addition to putting labor workers at risk, Tiffany has also voted against protections for firefighters, healthcare workers, and teachers.
In 2022, Tiffany voted “No” on the Firefighters Fairness Act, which would ensure firefighters have proper access to healthcare when they fall sick or injured from the job. Tiffany also voted against protecting frontline healthcare workers from violence at work and co-sponsored legislation to strip the nation’s largest teachers’ union of its federal charter recognition.
Back when Tiffany was serving in the state legislature, he even voted for Act 10, which undermined public sector unions representing teachers, nurses, garbage collectors, and other public safety workers.
