Wisconsin Republicans Plot to Remove Hundreds of Popular Items From State Budget Consideration

The provisions Republicans are poised to strip would help working families in Wisconsin deal with rising costs, make childcare more affordable, lower prescription drug costs, fund our public schools while holding the line on property taxes, feed hungry kids, keep our communities safe from lead poisoning, bring more revenue into the state, and much more.

MADISON, Wis. — Republicans on the Joint Finance Committee announced today their plan to remove hundreds of widely popular provisions in Governor Evers’ proposed budget.

Republicans’ proposed actions come after the Joint Committee on Finance received hours of testimony from hundreds of Wisconsinites who took time out of their day to attend committee hearings and testify about what issues were important to them.

In response, the following are statements from Lucy Ripp, Communications Director at A Better Wisconsin Together:

“Wisconsin Republicans have stood silently by as Donald Trump crashes our economy and his disastrous policies hike costs on working families. Then they sat in committee hearings as hundreds of Wisconsinites took time out of their days to share their testimony about what they wanted to see in the state budget.

“Now these same Republican legislators are not just opposing policies that would help Wisconsin families. It’s worse than that. They’re going to vote to throw out the plans that the people of Wisconsin have clearly said we want.

“Announcing their intent to remove these popular policies from the state budget is a clear indication they once again are choosing to put partisan politics over what’s best for the people of Wisconsin.”
