OP-ED: Wisconsin Republicans Wasted Critical Days Supporting MAGA Election Denier Jim Jordan Instead of Taking Action on Issues that Matter to Wisconsin Families

Without a Speaker, the House is unable to meaningfully advance action on the issues that matter to Wisconsin families. Wisconsin Republicans’ choice to waste critical time throwing support to Jordan, instead of working with Democrats on a bipartisan solution, was a clear signifier that they are willing to put their own partisan interests ahead of what’s best for Wisconsin.

In a third failed bid for Speaker of the House, MAGA ally and election denier Jim Jordan did not have enough votes to be elected Speaker, yet still had support from the entirety of Wisconsin’s Republican delegation before House Republicans dropped him entirely on Friday afternoon.

Last month, Congress and President Biden reached a funding agreement that successfully blocked a government shutdown through November 17 – no thanks to Wisconsin Representatives Tom Tiffany and Scott Fitzgerald, who voted against the plan.

In addition to Tiffany and Fitzgerald, it is extremely disappointing that fellow Republicans Derrick Van Orden, Mike Gallagher, Bryan Steil, and Glenn Grothman have also been unwilling to work together and reach a compromise to allow our House to function as it should: for the people.

Congress now has less than a month to work together and reach an agreement to avoid a government shutdown that would severely harm constituents, by cutting programs that help millions of hardworking Wisconsinites provide for their families.

By voting against the agreement last month and now refusing to work across the aisle to elect a House Speaker, Wisconsin Republicans are happily endorsing:

  • 900 Wisconsin service members losing their pay;
  • 90,000+ Wisconsinites put at risk of losing critical nutrition assistance;
  • 500+ TSA officers and 70+ air traffic controllers in Wisconsin being forced to work without pay;
  • $3,000,000+ in losses for Wisconsin’s small businesses;
  • Several delays for disaster recovery projects across Wisconsin; and more.

Call your Wisconsin representatives in the House today at (202) 224-3121 and demand they put partisanship aside and work together for the well-being of Wisconsinites.
