On Juneteenth, Wisconsin Lawmakers Must Stand Up Against MAGA Efforts to Erase Black History

As we celebrate today, we also are reminded that the work is not done. From attempts to ban the Juneteenth flag from being flown in Wisconsin and censor what can be taught in our public schools, to scrubbing Black history from government websites and signing an executive order attacking the Museum of African American History, Trump and his Republican allies in Wisconsin are blatantly trying to erase Black history, undo the progress made, and stifle the progress yet to come.

MADISON, Wis. — As we honor and recognize Juneteenth, a celebration of Black freedom, liberation, and resiliency that commemorates the formal end of slavery in the South on June 19 in 1865, A Better Wisconsin Together is calling on Wisconsin lawmakers to stand up against the Trump Administration and certain Wisconsin Republicans’ recent attacks on and attempts to erase Black history.

The following are statements from A Better Wisconsin Together:

Wisconsin was home to one of the first Juneteenth celebrations outside of the South, and we join together again this year with those commemorating and celebrating Black freedom, liberation, and resiliency.

“As we celebrate today, we also are reminded that the work is not done.

“In this current moment and beyond, we all have a part to play – especially those we elect to represent us in local, state, and federal offices – in confronting and dismantling racism, and learning and growing from our history.

“We encourage every lawmaker governing in our name, from our State Capitol all the way to the White House and Congress, to protect Black history and freedom in the face of these blatant attacks.”
