Ahead of Affordable Care Act Anniversary, A Better Wisconsin Together Urges Lawmakers to Prioritize Affordable Health Care
MADISON, Wis. — March 23, 2024 will mark the 14th anniversary of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) being signed into law by President Obama, legislation that has been instrumental in expanding access to health care across the nation. As we reflect on this milestone anniversary, A Better Wisconsin Together is calling on Wisconsin lawmakers to continue further investments in affordable and accessible health care for Wisconsinites.
“Wisconsinites should not have to go broke or into debt trying to pay for essential medical care, and nobody should have to choose between paying rent or affording their medications,” said Chris Walloch, executive director of A Better Wisconsin Together.
Investments like the ACA have been essential in the expansion of affordable health care, and progressive leaders are continuing that work, like Governor Evers’ recent announcement that Wisconsinites who use BadgerCare can now access free over the counter birth control. But according to Walloch, more can still be done as GOP politicians and leaders are actively trying to repeal the ACA and attack efforts to expand health care access.
“From Donald Trump to Wisconsin MAGA faction leaders like Eric Hovde, Senator Ron Johnson, and Congressmen Derrick Van Orden and Bryan Steil continuing their attacks on the ACA, we must keep passing legislation that protects affordable health care,” said Walloch.
Below are pieces of legislation Wisconsin’s state or federal lawmakers can pass to further secure affordable health care for Wisconsin families:
- Improving Health Insurance Affordability Act;
- Assembly Bill 746 to expand BadgerCare access;
- The Less for Rx Act;
- Assembly Bill 584 to cap insulin costs at $35;
- Senate Bill 1060 / Assembly Bill 1149 to include mental health coverage in health insurance plans;
- Reproductive Freedom Act;
- Right to Contraception Act.
“People across Wisconsin agree that health care should be accessible and affordable for all, and it’s time that GOP lawmakers fulfill their duty to stand up for our health and wellness by supporting health care expansion introduced by their Democratic colleagues,” Walloch said.
This ACA anniversary and beyond, call your state (1-800-362-9472) and federal (202-224-3121) lawmakers and demand they protect affordable and accessible health care for Wisconsinites.
