MADISON, Wis. — It’s been barely two weeks since Republican Congressman Tom Tiffany announced he is running for governor in Wisconsin, and according to recent news reports he’s already been caught trying to hide his radical right-wing record and beliefs from the people of Wisconsin.
“Unfortunately for Tom Tiffany, it’s going to take a lot more than scrubbing his record off of his website to make Wisconsinites forget how radically out of touch he is on the issues they care about,” said A Better Wisconsin Together Communications Director Lucy Ripp.
Two of the sections Tiffany recently deleted from his website include his extreme views on abortion and guns.
It is well documented that Tiffany supports putting politicians like himself in charge of your reproductive healthcare decisions. He supported imposing dangerous bans on abortion at the state and federal level, and even went so far as to cast a vote against legislation to protect access to contraception. Tiffany has also been repeatedly endorsed by an extremist anti-abortion group that wants to use a state law from 1849 to ban abortion in Wisconsin.
Tiffany was also one of the deciding votes to prohibit organizations that provide abortion care from being reimbursed by Medicaid for any health care services. Reimbursement for abortion care specifically was already prohibited by federal law. Because of Tiffany’s vote, Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin recently was forced to pause providing abortion care services in Wisconsin.
Tiffany’s website scrub also seemed intended to hide his extremism in opposing common-sense gun safety measures. But again, his documented record reveals the truth. Tiffany has co-sponsored and voted in favor of a bill to eliminate a waiting period for handgun purchases and has introduced legislation to allow people to carry hidden guns in public without having to pass a background check, be licensed, or have any gun safety training
According to Ripp, its disappointing yet not surprising that Tiffany would want to hide his egregious and unpopular record on abortion and firearms from Wisconsinites.
Recent polling shows that 74% of Wisconsinites support safe and legal abortion access in the Badger State and believe politicians like Tom Tiffany have no business making those decisions for constituents. Public opinion polls of Wisconsin voters also find that Wisconsinites, including gun owners, overwhelmingly want common sense gun safety legislation in Wisconsin.
“The people of Wisconsin deserve honesty and transparency from our elected officials,” said Ripp. “If Tom Tiffany is so ashamed of Wisconsinites knowing the truth about his record and beliefs then maybe he should consider a different career.”
