Wisconsin Supreme Court Debate Makes Clear Brad Schimel Doesn’t Stand With Wisconsinites

MADISON, Wis. — Tonight, candidates running for Wisconsin Supreme Court in the April 1 election participated in a public debate where they spoke about their qualifications and stances on issues that Wisconsinites care about. A Better Wisconsin Together Communications Director Lucy Ripp said tonight’s debate made one thing clear: right-wing judge Brad Schimel doesn’t stand with Wisconsinites on the issues that matter most. Ripp released the following statement: “No matter how hard Schimel tried to deflect and distract in tonight’s debate, he can’t hide from his dangerous and out of touch record on real issues that Wisconsinites are facing. “Despite a majority of Wisconsinites agreeing that abortion should be legal across the state, Schimel has supported using a law from 1849, before women even had the right to vote, to ban abortion without exceptions sexual assault or the health of the mother. “Not only has he praised using the 1849 law as an abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest, Schimel has also delayed justice for survivors of sexual assault while serving as Attorney General and has a history of victim blaming in the courtroom, proving he doesn’t take the safety of Wisconsin women seriously. “Wisconsinites know the importance of being able to access affordable health care when and where we need it. But as Attorney General, Schimel sued to overturn and eliminate the Affordable Care Act. If he had succeeded almost one million Wisconsinites could have lost their healthcare. “Schimel also has a long and documented record of using the power of his office to benefit campaign contributors over the well-being of average Wisconsinites. Now, right-wing billionaire Elon Musk is spending millions in support of Schimel’s campaign because he knows Schimel is up for sale. “There’s no debate about it: Schimel’s record in public office indicates he will put his own partisan agenda above a duty to serve the people of Wisconsin.” |
