ICYMI: Results of Marquette Law School Poll Demonstrate Need for Fair Maps
MADISON, Wis. — Results from a recent Marquette Law School poll have revealed that most Wisconsin voters support the Wisconsin Supreme Court’s decision that our current GOP drawn state legislative maps are unconstitutional. The poll results also expose a concerning correlation between the issues that Wisconsinites support and want action on – like abortion rights and marijuana legalization – and the issues that Republican legislators have neglected to address.
According to A Better Wisconsin Together Executive Director Chris Walloch, under our current GOP-drawn state legislative maps – which have now been found unconstitutional by the state’s highest court – it’s no coincidence that the issues supported by a majority of Wisconsinites are the same issues that the GOP controlled legislature continues to obstruct.
“This is a clear demonstration of the need for fair maps in Wisconsin, so that our legislature is an accurate reflection of the will of the people it represents,” said Walloch. “These poll results have made it glaringly obvious that maps rigged by Republicans have allowed GOP politicians to dodge being held accountable for ignoring issues that are important to Wisconsinites.”
In addition to the issues laid out in the newest Marquette poll, other issues with overwhelming support that GOP legislators have refused to take up include:
- Common sense gun safety legislation;
- Medicaid expansion;
- Increasing public school funding;
- And more.
“Thankfully, the new majority on the Wisconsin Supreme Court has provided a pathway for fair maps in Wisconsin, and will soon ensure that Wisconsin’s maps are up to constitutional standards,” said Walloch.
