MADISON, Wis. — In tonight’s State of the State address, Governor Tony Evers celebrated the success of his administration – like a growing Wisconsin economy and healthy state government finances – and called for the legislature to join him in keeping the focus on what Wisconsinities need to thrive and build stronger communities.

In response to tonight’s speech, the following are statements from A Better Wisconsin Together Deputy Director Mike Browne:

“Governor Evers reported tonight that the state of our state is indeed strong. He and his administration deserve credit for focusing on the issues the people of Wisconsin care about and for the results – like high rates of employment, rising incomes, and a state government not just on solid fiscal footing, but with a record budget surplus.

“The Governor also rightly pointed out that there is more to do. We applaud his commitment to protect our freedoms and support our efforts to build strong communities where our kids are safe from gun violence and where our diversity is respected, not exploited for partisan political gain.

“Governor Evers is listening to Wisconsinites and working to deliver on the issues that matter most – from lowering the cost of everyday expenses like prescription drugs, child care, and groceries; creating new, well-paying jobs; tax savings for middle class families; supporting K-12 education, colleges and universities, technical colleges, apprenticeships, and job training; and protecting Wisconsinites’ right to access abortion care and birth control.

“Meanwhile, legislative Republicans have started the new year with distractions and misplaced priorities – pushing dangerous abortion banstrying to make it harder for eligible voters to vote, and focusing on tax giveaways to the wealthiest few that leave working families behind.

“It’s time for Republicans to put the petty partisanship and divisive politics behind and work with Governor Evers and their Democratic colleagues in building a better future for Wisconsin families.”

Call your legislator today at 1-800-362-9472 and demand they work with Governor Evers on making the vision unveiled tonight a reality for all Wisconsinites.
