MADISON, Wis. – Several of Donald Trump’s cost-hiking tariffs, supported every step of the way by right-wing U.S. Representative and gubernatorial candidate Tom Tiffany, were recently struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court. According to estimates, the average American family has paid over $1,700 in increased costs due to the Trump-Tiffany tariffs and, now that they’ve been found to have been improperly imposed, Wisconsin working people and families should get their money back.
“Donald Trump, with Tom Tiffany’s support, imposed a tariff tax that cost consumers billions of dollars. Now that the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled the Trump-Tiffany tariff tax was improperly imposed from the start, we should get our money back,” commented A Better Wisconsin Together Deputy Director Mike Browne.
According to a decision written by the right-wing chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court John Roberts, Donald Trump did not have the authority to impose tariffs under the emergency power law the administration used. It is estimated that consumers have paid over $231 billion in total tariff costs between February of 2025 and January of 2026.
Meanwhile, Trump acolyte Tom Tiffany praised the tariff tax hike as “really good things” and cast deciding votes in the U.S. House of Representatives to keep imposing tariffs in 2025 and 2026.
Browne concluded, “No Wisconsinite should have to foot the bill for Donald Trump’s unlawful tariff tax and Tom Tiffany should be standing up to Trump and getting to work for us on getting our money back.”
