GOP State Senate Misses Last Opportunity to Help Wisconsinites Before Taking Off for the Year

MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin’s GOP-controlled State Senate, which made headlines as one of the laziest legislative bodies in recent state history, held its last floor session of the year today and yet is no closer to solving some of the most pressing issues facing our local communities. After today, they are not scheduled to meet again until 2026.

“Rather than take this final opportunity to address the important issues facing our local communities this year – like rising costs, healthcare access, and more – Republicans spent the day pushing an anti-abortion agenda, trying to starve Wisconsin’s public schools, and more radical right-wing nonsense that only serves themselves, not constituents,” said A Better Wisconsin Together Communications Director Lucy Ripp.

Among the bills advanced by Republicans today is a GOP-authored abortion bill that, as the author has admitted, is meant to protect their political self-interests and that Republicans’ true intention is to ban all abortions in Wisconsin.

Another Republican bill pushed forward by Wisconsin’s GOP state senators today would continue the trend of forcing school districts to go to referendum – asking voters to raise their own property taxes – just to cover basic operations. The GOP proposal comes on the heels of their refusal as part of the 2025 state budget to fund any increase in state general school aid to help hold the line on local property taxes.

“Our state legislators are elected to give our communities a voice in the State Capitol, and facing their very last opportunity of the year to do so, Republicans once again prioritized their own selfish partisanship over what’s best for their constituents,” said Ripp. “Wisconsinites deserve better.”
