Misplaced Priorities: Wisconsin Republicans Open up Legislative Session by Ignoring Real Issues Facing Wisconsin Communities

MADISON, Wis. – Our state constitution exists to protect our rights and freedoms as Wisconsinites. However, instead of respecting its purpose, Republicans in our state legislature are working to undermine our Wisconsin constitution despite having just yesterday taken an oath of office to uphold and protect it.

“Instead of kicking off the 2025 session of our legislature by working to solve real issues facing our local Wisconsin communities and families, Republicans in our state Senate are instead rushing to try and manipulate our state constitution for their own selfish political motivations,” said Mike Browne, deputy director of A Better Wisconsin Together.

Wisconsin Republicans held a hearing today on a GOP resolution that proposes altering our constitution to enshrine provisions making voting more complicated and that could harm many eligible voters, especially older voters, those living in rural communities, and voters of color.

“People want their legislature working for them on issues like funding for our schools, affordable health care, tax savings for working people and the middle class, protecting clean water, and keeping our communities free from gun violence,” Browne added. “That’s not what they’re getting from Republicans in the state legislature.”
