OP-ED: Trump Wants to Open Door for Dangerous State Abortion Bans

Donald Trump continues to brag about his central role in the overturning of Roe v. Wade, and is now saying he wants to put state politicians in charge of our personal decisions on abortion.

An overwhelming majority of Americans, including a majority of Wisconsinites, agree that abortion should be legal, safe, and accessible for all – and that politicians have no business mandating decisions that ought to be made between a patient and their doctor.

Yet, Donald Trump continues to brag about his central role in the overturning of Roe v. Wade, and is now saying he wants to put state politicians in charge of our personal decisions on abortion.

In Wisconsin, we know all too well the danger that can come from putting GOP state lawmakers in charge of making decisions about our access to reproductive health care.

As soon as Trump and his MAGA allies took away our constitutionally protected right to abortion access with the overturning of Roe v. Wade, Republican state legislators in Wisconsin tried to use a statute from 1849 to block Wisconsinites from accessing abortion care and to threaten doctors with felony charges for performing care.

But Wisconsinites came together to show our opposition to having our rights taken away, and reproductive rights advocates won a court decision allowing abortion care to resume, for now, in Wisconsin.

In response, state Republicans stooped to a new low in their crusade against reproductive freedom, proposing a new abortion ban that would put themselves in charge of constituents’ decisions about abortion care, where they have no business.

Similar trends are happening in other states, where MAGA state lawmakers are trying to ban abortion pills, contraception, and even IVF, a process that helps people with fertility issues start a family.

That’s why leaders like Senator Tammy Baldwin, President Joe Biden, and Vice President Kamala Harris are pushing to solidify abortion rights at the federal level, so that Wisconsinites are protected against radical state legislators trying to force their way into our exam rooms.

Wisconsinites have united together to reject Trump and his MAGA allies’ agenda in the past, and we will do it again. Call your federal representative today at 202-224-3121 and demand they support federal protections for abortion care.
