Assembly Republicans Leave Wisconsinites’ Cares Behind for Florida Beach Campaign Cash Grab

Republicans could be in Wisconsin today, taking action on proposals to give hard working Wisconsin families a hand up. But they’re on a beach in Florida instead, with their hands out for special interest cash for their campaigns.

MADISON, Wis. — After calling it quits for the year in February, effectively ending the legislative session with ten months left in 2024, Assembly Republican leaders are spending their time this week shaking down special interests for campaign cash. The Assembly Republican campaign arm is hosting a $6,000 per person fundraiser in Key Largo Florida, touted by the local chamber of commerce as a “paradise … where you can kick off your shoes and leave your cares behind …”

“As Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and his cohorts mingle with wealthy donors at cocktail receptions and private dinners, the rest of us are left picking up the tab for their unfinished business,” commented A Better Wisconsin Together Deputy Director Mike Browne. “There’s still plenty of work to be done to give Wisconsin families and communities tools they can use to succeed.”

He noted the Assembly Republicans skipping town early while they soak up the Florida sun and special interest cash means there will be no chance to pass a paid family and medical leave law, protect access to birth control and abortion care, lower health care costs and expand coverage for new mothers, hold corporate polluter accountable for cleaning up PFAS contaminated water or legalize marijuana, among many pressing issues.

Browne concluded, “Republicans could be in Wisconsin today, taking action on proposals to give hard working Wisconsin families a hand up. But they’re on a beach in Florida instead, with their hands out for special interest cash for their campaigns.”

Call Robin Vos (608-266-9171) or your Assembly representative (1-800-362-9472) today and demand they do their job from the Capitol and deliver for the people of Wisconsin, not special interest donors.
