MADISON, Wis. — Today, on Workers’ Memorial Day, A Better Wisconsin Together stands in solidarity with those who are fighting to strengthen workers’ rights and ensure safe workplaces for all.

The following are statements from Chris Walloch, executive director of A Better Wisconsin Together:

“As we honor and remember those who have lost their lives or fallen ill or injured on the job, it’s a reminder that we all should be able to go to work each day knowing that we are safe from harm, injury, and death. It’s a reminder that safety on the job should be a fundamental right.

“To make that right a reality in Wisconsin, we need our elected representatives to fight for workers. That means creating better paying jobs with safe working conditions. It means honoring fallen workers by ensuring that safe and healthy workplaces are guaranteed for every Wisconsinite working today.

“Whatever the job, we should have the freedom to have our voices heard in our workplaces and join with our colleagues to negotiate safe working conditions and good wages and benefits.

“Unfortunately we’ve seen certain politicians, like Ron Johnson in the U.S. Senate and fellow extremists in Wisconsin state government, siding with greedy corporations and against the workers on whose labor their profits are made. They’ve attacked worker freedoms to make their voices heard and, in the case of Ron Johnson, just this year prevented over 1,000 union jobs from coming to Wisconsin.

“Together, we can demand that working in safe and healthy conditions is a fundamental right in Wisconsin. In remembrance on Worker’ Memorial Day, call, tweet, or write your local elected officials to let them know Wisconsinites stand united in the fight for workers’ rights and the freedom to have a safe workplace.”
