Research Associate

A Better Wisconsin Together (ABWT) is seeking a Research Associate to support an extensive statewide political research program. This is a 6-month project position, with the possibility of extension.

The ideal candidate will be highly detail-oriented, self-motivated and organized, have familiarity with Wisconsin’s government and political climate, and have a passion for progressive politics. This position reports to the Research Director and works in collaboration with ABWT’s research and communications team members.

Start Date: July 2022
Salary: $45,000-$55,000

About A Better Wisconsin Together

ABWT, a progressive state communications and research hub in Wisconsin, is seeking a Research Associate to join our team. We’re an advocacy organization focused on public policy and serving as a center for progressive message development, testing, and communications. This is an exciting position where you will be working with a team to advance progressive values. Along with rapid response and earned media, ABWT engages Wisconsinites on issues using paid digital, television, and radio communications.

While this position is currently remote, it will be based in Madison, Wisconsin upon the re-opening of our offices once it is safe to do so. Our in-person office is currently closed due to COVID-19. Additionally, this position may require some travel, as well as evening and weekend hours as needed. We are a small, nimble team working in a fast-paced environment on the frontlines of the fight to advance progressive values and policies in Wisconsin.

Job Responsibilities

  • Work independently to conduct research on candidates, elected officials, issues, and organizations using a wide variety of databases, internet sources and published information;
  • Quickly gather, analyze and summarize legislative voting histories, court records and legal documents, campaign finance data, public government records, and related items;
  • Monitor and track media outlets including radio, television, newsprint, and online outlets;
  • Draft, edit, and collaborate on public-facing research memos, issue briefs and other resources;
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the Research Director.


We are seeking candidates with a passion for progressive politics who have extraordinary attention to detail and are interested in gathering and analyzing information about current and prospective elected officials, organizations, and current events. They will have strong organizational skills and will thrive working in a team environment on research to inform communications and strategies.

You should have:

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills;
  • Strong attention to detail and strong organizational skills;
  • Good understanding of government and politics in Wisconsin;
  • Interest in legislative and legal proceedings;
  • Ability to become familiar with new databases and resources quickly;
  • A strong commitment to working in a tight team with positive, supportive attitude and the willingness to be flexible and take on additional tasks as needed;
  • A demonstrated commitment to disrupting racism and other systemic barriers in the advocacy world.

Salary is $45,000-$55,000 annually. Benefits include health, dental and vision insurance.
